About Litlaá in Kelduhverfi

The source of Litlaá in Kelduhverfi was originally only in springs with the name Brunnar close to Keldunes farm. From 1976 the river has also source from lake Skjálftavatn that formed in 1976 after massive earthquake period during Krafla eruption.

Location: Northeast Iceland - Approximately 10 km west of Ásbyrgi in Kelduhverfi and about 55 km east of Húsavík.

Angling areas: Litlaá is one area and the anglers arrange themselves the division of angling pools in each case.   

Allowed number of rods: 5 rods in Litlaá river and 2 rods in lake Skjálftavatn. Common permits for Litlaá and Skjálftavatn.

Angling permits: Sold in groups and individual rods. Full days or half days.

Angling season: 1. April - 10. October.

Permitted hours:
1. to 30. April: 9-21.
1. May to 15. September: 7 -13 and 16 - 22, the afternoon with +/-3 hours flexibility (totally 6 hours).
16. September to 10. October: 8-20.

Permitted lure: Only fly fishing is permitted
Catch polices: Catch and release

Anglers must keep their permit with them while fishing and show them to warden upon request.
Only fly fishing is permitted, on a catch and release basis.

Driving is not allowed off tracks by the river, over vegetated ground or anywhere where that might cause damage.
All use of firearms is strictly forbidden.
If two people are sharing a rod, they must remain in the same fishing stretch, with only one of them fishing at a time.
Any breach of these rules above, use of prohibited bait or lure may lead to immediate expulsion from the Litlaá river, without compensation.
The warden is authorised to inspect tackle and see to the enforcement of the above rules.
Anglers are requested to show consideration and be tidy along the river, not leaving behind any rubbish, fishing lines packaging or other waste in the Litlaá environment.

The guesthouse Keldunes offers several fully furnished cottages, each with a private bathroom. In the guesthouse are 6 fully equipped double rooms with made up beds, a common bathroom with showers, a nice dining room, a TV sitting room, and excellent conditions for both outdoor and indoor cooking. The guesthouse at Skúlagarður also offers accommodation and catering. There are also several farm accommodation services in the vicinity.

RECOMMENDED GEAR: One hand rod, size 5-7
RECOMMENDED FLIES: Black Ghost, Dentist, various nobblers and chrysalis, larva imitations and dry flies.
LOCAL CONDITIONS AND ACCESSABILITY: Mostly all the fishing stretches are easily accessible. To access some of the nether stretches a jeep can be convenient.
